Inside the Puppet Lab: New Silicone Innovations

From skin-like translucency to hyper-durable joints, new silicone formulas are transforming puppet fabrication.

Studios have begun using platinum-cure silicones with micro-fiber blends, creating characters that stretch and flex more naturally under camera lights.

Veteran fabricator Marcos Beltran explains, “We can now tint silicone on the molecular level. That means no more paint cracking, and no need for constant repairs mid-shoot.”

This innovation has also lowered costs, since puppets now last longer across hundreds of frames — a huge win for long-form productions.
